Why adult scooters are great for fitness & for your daily commute

Scooting is a great form of cardio fitness and has many benefits for our health. Are you looking for a new workout that doesn't feel like a chore or that gets you outside in the fresh air? Then read on, because scooting is your answer!

Not only do we at Pose Fit believe that scooting is a fun, healthy and cost effective way of getting into shape and burning calories, it is a fact. The University of Brighton recently found that scooting for 45 minutes burns an average of 350 calories an hour. That’s equivalent to losing around 1 lb a week in weight, which seems like a relatively easy achievement when comparing it to some activities that some cannot do, due to joint issues or previous injuries. When you compare it to walking and cycling for example, you could potentially achieve your fitness goals a lot quicker. Walking burning 149 calories and cycling 270 calories retrospectively.

Scooting provides a great aerobic workout without the fuss of going to a gym, buying new sportswear or getting too sweaty. It’s easy to incorporate into your everyday life and is great for the mind as well as the body.

  • Effective stretching and strengthening of most muscle groups (namely belly, back, buttocks, thighs, calves)
  • Increased level of fitness
  • One of the most effective methods of burning calories
  • Outdoor exercise is important for mental health

In Western Europe scooting has become a popular trend, mainly due to it's main use as a method of transport across many cities. The adult kick scooter has become a go to for the commuter, particularly with the quality of design available now. Swifty Scooters has significantly evolved the market through their design of a smooth and safer ride, due to the larger 16" wheel. Their lightweight and foldable options further make the foot bike, a great form of transport to your workplace. We personally feel more assured that these frames are safer than the smaller wheeled versions, which is why we have chosen to work with Swifty Scooters. There are other options available and have used them but the quality of ride just was not the same, having to slam on the brakes, if there were pot holes.

The SwiftyOne foldable adult scooter is the ideal method of transport that is not only great for the environment with no carbon emissions, but it is cost effective. No planes, trains or automobiles required!

Scooting saves joints significantly because it does not lead to any shocks. On the other hand, jogging may have negative impacts on joints and backs because of shocks.

Cycling actively employs only the lower part of the body while the upper part becomes stiff which may result in back pains. Scooting is far more effective - apart from lower body muscles it also effectively employs back, chest and belly muscles which are stretched and strengthened. On top of that, there are no pressure sores from a hard saddle!

Scooting requires alternation of tense and loose muscles. Muscles are stretched when the body bends forward swiftly as a result of the pressure exerted by the stepping leg. The second stage is straightening of body position in which back and belly muscles are being relaxed. Do not forget to alternate stepping legs so that you do not overload the left or right side of the body!

If you are looking for any muscle strengthening exercises, to help develop your core, balance and glutes then follow exercises at home workouts.

While riding a scooter most muscle groups are working (namely those which shape our belly, buttocks, thighs, calves) and it is also an excellent assistant in weight loss. And we can only say - it is such good fun!

Scooting is an unexpected method in fighting obesity - according to calorie charts, in a one-minute scooter ride at the speed of 18 km/hour you burn 0.76 kJ/per one kilogram of weight; while cycling at the same speed and the same time you burn "only" 0.46kJ. If you want to burn the same amount of calories, you would have to cycle at the speed of 30km/hour.

The Polar Unite Fitness can track the data from your workout, to help you achieve your fitness goals.

In terms of energy burn, scooting equals a very brisk run or a fast swim. You burn roughly one fourth more joules than you do e.g. during aerobics, judo training or zumba dancing - and this should be food for thought for those of you looking for some alternative workouts!

Our favourite scooter for fitness is the SWIFTY ZERO adult scooter. It ticks all the boxes as it is light and nimble, only weighing 8.2KG making it our lightest and fastest scooter.

The low weight aluminium frame makes it easy to transfer energy into speed, but does not compromise on strength, the SwiftyZERO holds a Max Load rating of 150kg. The 16-inch pneumatic tyres and long enough wheelbase allows you to glide across mixed terrain and in any weather, comfort and style.
